Gina Cross Artist

Gina Cross (1969) is a London based multi-disciplinary artist whose work investigates the relationships between shape, colour, space and light. Within her art practice she is currently working with metal and paper - often found or reclaimed. The foundation for her recent collection of works on metal is examining the sense of space and light encountered in urban environments, the details that we may miss while we travel around our magical cities full of shapes, shadows, colours and connections. She describes her current work as trying to ‘join the dots' as she continues her ongoing research and exploration of contemporary art history.

Originally trained in printed textiles, Gina’s intuitive approach to her work is to experiment with a number of materials and processes to generate her artwork.

Her recent works have been exploring working with copper, brass and aluminium panels, including painting, photo-etching and printing directly on to the metals, using both analogue and digital processes. For Gina, the reflective nature of the material informs the interaction of colour to the viewer and creates a spacial element to the works.  During the process of working on the metal, she embraces ‘accidents’ and does not aim to present the metal plates in a state of perfection but to present the process itself, which may include burnishing from chemicals used during the etching process to marks made accidentally during the etching process.

Since 2023 Gina has been developing works in 3D and is currently training in metal sculpture at Morley College under Andrew Revell

Gina’s ongoing research is in to the effect of space, light and colour on our wellbeing.
